Francisco Pestana Araújo , the coordinator of Internal Medicine at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo, is one of the authors of the Portuguese-Brazilian guidelines for the treatment of type 2 diabetes cases. Promoted by four scientific societies of Endocrinology from Portugal and Brazil, the common document was published in the edition of last May 24 of the scientific journal “Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome”. In the last few years, many developments were registered in the pharmacological therapy of type 2 diabetes , broadening the way of approaching the disease, where the prevention of cardiovascular and renal complications becomes fundamental. In this context, four scientific societies decided to combine efforts in the sense of conducting a systematic revision on several open issues in this approach, namely: the Brazilian Society of Diabetes (SBD); the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM); the Portuguese Society of Diabetes (SPD); the Portuguese Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (SPEDM). Thus arose the “Portuguese-Brazilian evidence-based guidelines on the management of hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus”, that counted with the contribution of a panel of 33 specialists from the two countries. Among other areas, were discussed themes such as the adequate glycemic target, the indication of different therapeutic combinations and the benefit of the new therapeutic classes in renal complications and cardiac insufficiency. “The very diverse reality in the two countries was not detrimental to the analysis. On the contrary, it allowed the introduction of different points of view that contributed a lot for the universal applicability of the recommendations in the medical therapy of diabetes”, highlights Francisco Araújo. “Portuguese‑Brazilian evidence‑based guideline on the management of hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus” (PDF 1,59 MB)
