Hospital da Luz Lisboa is pioneer in Portugal with an Orthopaedics team exclusively dedicated to the treatment of traumatic injuries. This clinical team is organized to assist and operate patients with bone fractures and other traumatic injuries, in a prompt and efficient manner. The trauma team deals not only with simple cases, but is also capable of treating complex fractures, ensuring a specialized approach even in the most challenging scenarios. Beyond that, it offers a multidisciplinary treatment to patients with trauma at the level of the locomotor system, collaborating closely with other medical specialities and orthopaedical subspecialities. This operating model allows a differentiated and personalized treatment, adjusted to the needs of each patient. Traumatology is the area of orthopaedics that deals with injuries caused by external and traumatic events, namely accidents or falls. The most frequent injuries in the area of traumatology are proximal femoral fractures (hip), distal radius fractures (wrist) and proximal humeral fractures (shoulder). The referral of patients to this team – composed of Filipe Carvalho and Luís Correia , in the photo above – is done via the Emergency Unit of the hospital , also having responsiveness capacity to requests from other hospitals. “Our trauma team is exclusively activated for traumatology situations requiring hospitalization, surgery and rehabilitation”, explains Paulo Rego , director of Hospital da Luz Lisboa Orthopaedics Service. “The existence of such a team to respond with agility to these situations allows us better assessment and coordination of the patients, before surgery and hospitalization, and consequently greater efficiency of treatment and recovery, with the early activation of the other medical specialities intervening in rehabilitation, which is particularly critical in the case of elderly patients”, he adds.
