Eduardo Moreira Pinto , Hospital da Luz orthopaedist, was elected chairman of the nternational Society Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (ISUBE) , the scientific society created by a group of specialists, for the purpose of developing and promoting advances in the area of endoscopy in spine surgery, particularly biportal endoscopy. This is an innovative technique being applied in disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, with promising results. “This connection with the International Society of Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy has for main goal the standardization of training and the promotion of biportal endoscopy, in collaboration with health institutions and professionals, so as to ensure that such advances are made available for as many people as possible, as well as to develop and scientifically validate new techniques”, explains Eduardo Moreira Pinto. Biportal endoscopy “is an innovative technique of spine endoscopy” and “it can be used in more common cases, such as disc herniations and canal narrowing in need of decompression, as well as selected cases of spinal fusion”, further explains the physician, describing its advantages: “This advancement towards endoscopic techniques may not simply improve the clinical results for patients, but also have a positive impact on health systems, reducing the direct and indirect costs associated with the treatment”.
