About 700 health professionals from 40 countries participated in the largest European congress of robotic urologic surgery – ERUS 2019, that was held for the first time in Portugal , between 11 and 13 September, at Centro de Congressos de Lisboa, with the support of Hospital da Luz. Along the three days, some of the most renowned world surgeons operated 18 patients in the operating unit from Hospital da Luz Lisboa – the surgeries were live-streamed to the congress. ERUS 2019 local organizing committee was headed by Kris Maes , the coordinator of the Uro- oncological Centre and the Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre at Hospital da Luz Lisboa. Born in Belgium, Kris Maes was pioneer in robotic surgery in Portugal, having contributed to the training and development of many Portuguese and European physicians. Hospital da Luz Lisboa was the first unit to perform robotic surgeries in Portugal, in June 2010 . In 2016, a second robot was acquired and over a thousand robotic surgeries have already been made there, the great majority to treat oncologic diseases, in the area of urology, but also general and thoracic surgery, among others.
