David Martins and Margarida Fonseca Santos, ophthalmologists from Hospital da Luz Setúbal, where they are specialists in cataract and vitreoretinal surgery, were speakers in the international congress of the European Vitreoretinal Society (EVRS), which took place in Lisbon, from 27 to 30 June. The former coordinated and participated in a training course on ophthalmologic surgery with 3D technology equipment and the latter presented the globally very positive results of the 170 surgeries (50 of which vitrectomies) already performed at Hospital da Luz Setúbal, resorting to this equipment. The 19 th congress of the European Vitreoretinal Society, which took place at Convento do Beato, gathered specialists in vitreoretinal surgery from all over the world. David Martins, who participated in the local organization of the congress, was also elected “Ambassador” of this society, during the closing ceremony of this event. Hospital da Luz Setúbal was the first private hospital unit in the country and the only one in the south region to be equipped with Ngenuity 3D Visualization System, in September 2018. This equipment can be used in multiple situations, particularly in vitreoretinal surgery, but also in cataract, corneal and glaucoma surgery. Capturing high-definition three-dimensional images, the device allows the surgeon and his assisting team to visualize in a monitor the inside of the patient’s ocular globe under surgery, in real time. “This is a technology that allows higher precision and safety of movement, during surgery. Additionally, it enables the whole team to follow-up what the surgeon is doing, which is not possible in conventional surgery, where the physician is bent over the microscope”, explained Margarida Santos. In the review presented in this congress, were included the ophthalmologic surgeries performed by this team and by professionals from Centro Hospitalar de Setúbal, which also already operate with 3D technology, since February this year. Besides Ngenuity 3D Visualization System, the operating room from Hospital da Luz Setúbal is equipped with other modern equipment for ophthalmologic surgery. In the field of retina, it is able to respond to urgent situations, such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy and ocular trauma.
