Filomena Ribeiro , the director of the Ophthalmology Service of Hospital da Luz Lisboa , was elected to the executive committee of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), that will be in charge of this organization until 2024. “This election signifies an opportunity for the representation of Portuguese Ophthalmology in the area of cataract and refractive surgery”, stresses Filomena Ribeiro, who is the first Portuguese ophthalmologist to be elected to the executive committee, in the last 20 years. The ESCRS is the most representative European association in this area, gathering over 7.500 members in 130 countries. It was established in 1991 to promote activities of training, research and innovation in ophthalmology, in particular in the area of refractive surgery, critical in the treatment of ophthalmological diseases, such as hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. The election of Filomena Ribeiro was already applauded by the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology.
