Filomena Ribeiro , the director of the Ophthalmology Service of Hospital da Luz Lisboa, is the new president of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery – ESCRS . The election took place during the 40 th Congress of this organization, between 16 to 20 September, in Milan, with a strong participation of Portuguese ophthalmologists. The ESCRS is the largest ophthalmology society in the world, with over 7,500 associates from 130 countries. It was established in 1991 to promote activities of training, research and innovation in ophthalmology, in particular in the area of refractive surgery, critical in the treatment of ophthalmological diseases, such as hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. The election, by a large majority of votes of the members present in congress, “is a source of great pride for Portuguese Ophthalmology” – highlights the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology , reminding that Filomena Ribeiro had already been, last year, “the first Portuguese ophthalmologist to be elected to the executive committee of the ESCRS, in the last 20 years”. Along the 4-year mandate, according to the ESCRS regulations, Filomena Ribeiro will start by taking over the functions of elected president (2023), then of president (2024 and 2025), and finally of past-president (2026)
