Portuguese and international orthopaedists specialized in foot and ankle surgery participated, on 8 and 9 July, in the theoretical-practical course Hot Topics Foot & Ankle Surgery . Held in Lisbon, in partnership with Nova Medical School, this was the first training in Portugal focused on less invasive surgical approaches to treat foot and ankle problems. The surgery to treat foot and ankle problems registered significant advances over the last decade, going from a secondary surgery with few tools and knowledge of pathology, to a fascinating area with many clinical and surgical innovations. “ Our purpose was to gather several specialists in the area and share less invasive ways (arthroscopic / percutaneous) of solving common problems ”, explains João Teixeira , Hospital da Luz orthopaedist, responsible for the organization. For instance, “this was the first training in Portugal to approach topics such as the arthroscopic ligamentoplasty of the ankle in the context of serious sprain, the endoscopic treatment of intersectional Achilles tendinopathy, and the fourth-generation percutaneous treatment of hallux valgus” (the commonly called bunion).
