Hélder Dores , cardiologist and responsible for the area of Sports Cardiology at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, published the book “Manual de Eletrocardiografia” (Electrocardiography Manual) – a practical guide destined to physicians and health professionals in general that treat and follow up cardiovascular patients. The book, edited by LIDEL, counts with the collaboration of other cardiologists, namely from the Cardiovascular Centre of Hospital da Luz Lisboa. “Although it is quite an old exam, the electrocardiogram remains essential to Medicine, allowing the early detection of several clinical conditions”, explains Hélder Dores, “This book intends to facilitate, in a simple and illustrative way, the interpretation of an electrocardiogram, which is sometimes challenging and complex, requiring experience”. “Manual de Eletrocardiografia” has a preface by Lino Gonçalves, the president of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology, who states: “Despite the high relevance of the electrocardiogram (ECG) in daily clinical practice, the ability to interpret it evinced by clinicians is largely variable, which sometimes implies difficulties in the diagnosis, not only of chronic situations, but also of emergent / urgent cases, resulting in adverse consequences for patients”. “For this reason”, he adds, “ the present book published by Hélder Dores is highly important and pertinent, as it provides in a structured and very pedagogical manner, all the information necessary for the development of the competencies required to read and interpret an ECG correctly ”.
