Hemodynamic monitoring is one of the most important and complex competencies in the approach to patients in critical situation. To train competencies and the most adequate clinical responses in such situations, the Simulation Centre of Hospital da Luz Learning Health organized, last month, the HeMoSim – Hemodynamic Monitoring of the Critical Patient Based on Simulation , a theoretical-practical course based on high-fidelity simulators, that allow participants to train as if they were dealing with real cases. The first edition of HeMoSim was taken by 22 physicians, specialists and internists, working in specialities of Internal Medicine and Intensive Medicine. On October 14 and 15, after completing the theoretical part of the course, “they trained emergency situations on patients in shock, that we may encounter in an Intensive Care Unit, for instance, but also in the Operating Room, Emergency Services or hospital wards”, explained Rita Faria – the director of the course and integrates the panel of trainers, together with André Carrão, André Godinho, Filipa Lagarto, João Pedro Colaço , Manuel Sousa, Patrícia Patrício and Steeve Rosado. The HeMoSim englobes two parts: Theoretical , provided in e-learning format (10 modules), made available to participants a month before the practical component; Practical, with training in simulation scenarios. The main goal of HeMoSim “is to provide the participants with the tools to identify the type of shock, stabilize and save the patient, using different methods of hemodynamic monitoring” . Along the two days of the practical component, the 22 trainees, distributed over four rooms, started by identifying the equipment of hemodynamic monitoring – namely, pulmonary and transpulmonary thermodilution, esophageal doppler and transthoracic echocardiography – and then devoting most of their time working, through simulation, on subsequent scenarios of patients with different types of shock, in which they were able to integrate the use of hemodynamic monitoring equipment in the resolution of the clinical cases. The HeMoSim is destined to internists or specialists in Anaesthesiology, Internal Medicine and other specialities in Intensive Medicine. The course has the scientific sponsorship of the Portuguese Society of Anaesthesiology and the Portuguese Society of Simulation Applied to Health Sciences.
