The Hip Unit of Hospital da Luz Arrábida performed recently a hip arthroscopy, resorting for the first time in Portugal to the Hip Check and Pivot Guardian system. The surgery was carried out by Fernando Leal – on the left in the photo above, with Cruz de Melo – to a patient with Femoroacetabular Impingement (when there is unusual contact between the femoral head and the acetabulum), a disease of the hip that affects adolescents and young adults, possibly causing early arthrosis of the hip. The hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique allowing access, through small incisions, to the hip joint and its respective treatment. “We were chosen to apply for the first time the Hip Check in Portugal, because we are a team specialized in hip preserving surgery, always looking for innovation and putting it at the service of the patient” , explains Fernando Leal. The Hip Check: Through images obtained by magnetic resonance, it is possible to make a preoperative planning of the hip surgery and, then, during surgery, the confirmation of the planned recession. By allowing to map the correction areas to treat and by confirming, during surgery, the success of the correction, we increase the accuracy and precision of the procedures; It minimizes the chance of residual deformity, which is one of the big causes of repeated interventions in patients with such pathologies. The technological evolution of the Hip Check is a major resource in our continuous investment towards obtaining better results and higher safety for patients.
