Hospital da Luz Coimbra has available the transient liver elastography, an ultrasound exam that allows to assess quickly and non-invasively, and with great accuracy, the presence of fibrosis and the level of fat in the liver. The exam is performed in the Imaging Service by professionals with specific training in pathologies of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas. This exam is particularly indicated in the diagnosis and follow-up of the following cases: Chronic liver diseases, with risk of developing fibrosis; Chronic B or C hepatitis; Non-alcoholic fatty liver; Alcoholic liver disease; Cholestatic liver diseases (bile ducts); Metabolic diseases; Steatosis and steatohepatitis; Pre and post-liver transplant stages. “The measuring of fibrosis and fat in the liver allows to assess the risk degree in chronic liver diseases to evolve to cirrhosis. That valuation may be used for monitoring patients and for assessing the therapeutic response, diagnosing early cases where it is possible to avoid the progression of the disease”, explains Filipe Caseiro Alves , the clinical director of Hospital da Luz Coimbra. Another important valuation “is concerning the assessment of haemorrhagic risk in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis”, highlights, on its turn, Paulo Gil Agostinho . Carried out resorting to ultrasound, the transient liver elastography: Is painless and non-invasive; Does not use radiation; Does not require specific preparation (it is simply recommended a 4-hour fasting period, before the intervention); Provides immediate results.
