Free health screenings for the population, advice from chef Mauro Loureiro on how to cook healthily and discounts on healthy restaurant menus. These are the main activities with which, on November 14 th , Hospital da Luz Clínica Luísa Todi will mark World Diabetes Day at Mercado da Conceição, in Setúbal. The day starts with free screenings. Between 10:30 am and 6:00 pm, our doctors, nurses and nutritionists are available to carry out health screenings and answer questions for anyone visiting Mercado da Conceição. These screenings include BMI calculations, glucose measurements and healthy eating advice, sharing useful and easy-to-make recipes whose ingredients can be purchased at the Market's vendors' stalls. Anyone who is screened by the Hospital da Luz team will receive a discount voucher for the healthy menus that all restaurant operators at Mercado da Conceição will create to mark this date. These special menus are available from the 14 th to the 19 th of November in the Market's restaurants, and the voucher can be used throughout the week. Still at the end of November 14 th , at 6:30 pm, chef Mauro Loureiro, who has a restaurant space in Mercado da Conceição, will give a healthy cooking class with the support of Hospital da Luz. This class is free, but subject to prior and mandatory registration by email: marketing.setubal@hospitaldaluz.pt As in other years, World Diabetes Day is one of the moments of the year in which professionals at Hospital da Luz have sought to be close to the population of Setúbal, raising awareness about the prevention of this pathology and the health care to be taken when it is already diagnosed. “Diabetes is one of the most prevalent diseases in our country and has a very significant impact on the health care provided in our hospitals. As healthcare professionals, it is never enough to work on diabetes prevention, leaving the hospital and being directly with the population, as we will do at this event. Furthermore, all the care we can provide will always represent health gains for people”, explains José Ferreira Santos , clinical director of Hospital da Luz Setúbal and Clínica Luísa Todi, concluding with an appeal: “We count on everyone's participation. Come and meet the Hospital da Luz team at Mercado da Conceição and get screened!” Diabetes In Portugal, the number of diabetes cases has doubled in the last 20 years. Around 40% of people with diabetes do not know they have the disease. The main reason for this reality is the population's sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical exercise and high-calorie diet. For this reason, diabetes is now known worldwide as ‘the epidemic of the 21st century’. Diabetes is a chronic disease, which depends on individual and behavioral factors, such as diet, physical activity, and schedule. Diabetes is excess blood sugar or hyperglycemia. Prolonged hyperglycemia is associated, in the medium to long term, with damage to several organs (for example: eyes, kidneys, nervous system and cardiovascular system).
