The Orthopedics Service of Hospital da Luz Lisboa, directed by Paulo Rego , has just been distinguished by the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) as training reference center at European level, thus reinforcing the essential role of our trainer experts in the development and qualification of new professionals in this domain. This certification results from the continuing work of ESSKA professors João Vide (coordinator of the Foot and Ankle Unit) and Carlos Maia Dias (in the area of shoulder and elbow). They are both internationally renowned orthopedists and perform an essential role as accredited trainers, ensuring that Hospital da Luz Lisboa offers theoretical and practical training of excellence, in line with the demanding ESSKA standards. “This accreditation represents an acknowledgement of the excellency of care provided by us in sports traumatology and arthroscopic surgery, beyond reflecting the contribution for scientific literature by a few elements of our service”, stresses Carlos Maia Dias. “It was thanks to the commitment of the whole team, meaning the ESSKA trainers and all colleagues of service, as well as nurses and other professionals involved in healthcare provision, that we saw our merit recognized in preparing a new generation of specialists”, refers João Vide. Founded in 1982, ESSKA (European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy) is the major European organization in the areas of sports medicine and degenerative joint diseases, congregating over 15 thousand professionals from over a hundred countries. The ESSKA mission comprises the improvement of treatment and quality of life for patients, and in particular the promotion of research and high-quality training – goals where João Vide and Carlos Maia Dias assume today a relevant role at Hospital da Luz Lisboa.
