Hospital da Luz Lisboa (HLL) offers a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program for patients who have suffered an acute cardiac event, such as an acute myocardial infarction, undergone cardiac surgery or who live with heart failure, and who wish to improve and recover their physical, psychological, and social condition. This program, which has seen more than three dozen patients in the last 6 months, covers all phases of cardiac rehabilitation (phases 1, 2 and 3) and is prepared to respond, in a multidisciplinary way, to the various clinical conditions of cardiac pathology. heart. “We are the first private hospital to develop a complete and comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program, which ensures its patients, as recommended, a case-by-case approach, carried out by professionals with experience in this area”, explains the person responsible for this program, cardiologist Hélder Dores . The HLL Cardiac Rehabilitation Program consists of three phases of intervention - hospital, early outpatient and long-term outpatient or maintenance -, which include all the essential components of cardiac rehabilitation : risk stratification and prior assessment of the patient; physical exercise sessions, carried out following an individualized exercise prescription and monitored by specialized professionals; identification and control of cardiovascular risk factors; nutritional assessment and counseling; psychological assessment and intervention; and teaching sessions. Despite the multiple proven benefits, Portugal has one of the lowest rates of patients included in cardiac rehabilitation programs. Less than 10% of patients with acute myocardial infarction are part of these programs, with the European average rate being over 30%. At Hospital da Luz Lisboa, “we intend to contribute to changing this paradigm. The existence of a differentiated multidisciplinary team, with experience in cardiac rehabilitation and motivated, excellent physical conditions and equipment, technological support that facilitates the various stages of this process, and above all an offer that encompasses the possibility of carrying out cardiac rehabilitation in the different phases, are characteristics that differentiate us”, explains the person responsible for this program. “Cardiovascular disease continues to lead the causes of mortality in developed countries, being responsible for around 30% of annual deaths in Portugal, mainly due to stroke and acute myocardial infarction. This reality is true, despite the current availability of very effective therapeutic options, both pharmacological and percutaneous and surgical interventions, the result of robust scientific evidence”, recalls cardiologist Hélder Dores, reinforcing: “Cardiac rehabilitation, which is indicated for people with coronary disease, heart failure or even congenital heart disease, among others, it is associated with several benefits, such as reduced mortality, hospital readmissions and recurrence of cardiovascular events. Furthermore, it improves quality of life, reduces the risk of depression and anxiety, and accelerates the normalization of activities of daily living, particularly the return to work.” Discover the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Hospital da Luz Lisboa .
