A research work by Hospital da Luz Lisboa was distinguished in the annual congress of the European Society of Gynecological Endoscopy (ESGE), which took place early this month in Brussels. The paper on the role of NK cells (immune system) in endometriosis was presented by gynecologist obstetrician José Reis , the first author, and was distinguished with the “Michelle Nisolle Best Poster Presentation” award. “NK cells in endometriosis: could basic research open new therapeutic tools?” is the title of the paper, having as co-authors Catarina Martins and Miguel Ângelo Dias, from the Nova Medical School CHRC, and Luís Miguel Borrego and Jorge Lima , also CHRC researchers and Hospital da Luz Lisboa specialists. The Gynecology-Obstetrics Service of Hospital da Luz Lisboa is a center of reference in the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis, a disease that affects 10% of women in reproductive age and has great impact in terms of quality of life. This study carried out at Hospital da Luz views to establish bridges between the etiopathogenesis of the disease and the immune system, allowing the development of a diagnostic and disease-severity biomarker.
