The Cardiology Service of Hospital da Luz Setúbal already implants pacemakers to treat bradycardia: the slow heart rate or skipping heartbeats. The procedure is performed since July this year. Palpitations, faintness, and thoracic pain could be symptoms of heart arrhythmia (or alterations in heart rate). One of the most common arrhythmias is bradycardia, consisting in a slow or irregular heart rate or even breaks. Bradycardia can be treated with medication or through the insertion of devices such as the pacemaker. The pacemaker is a device that regulates the heart rate. Whenever the heart beats irregularly, the pacemaker releases a small electrical stimulus, that the patient does not feel, “reminding” the heart that it needs to contract again. “The insertion of a pacemaker allows the patient with bradycardia to resume normal life. After the procedure, complaints concerning fatigue diminish, and both dizziness and fainting disappear”, explains Francisco Moscoso Costa (in the centre, in the photo above). By offering this procedure of cardiac electrophysiology, Hospital da Luz Setúbal continues to extend the range of differentiated healthcare provided to the population. “We are now able to meet the needs of these patients, besides improving the response of our Emergency Service”, further highlights the cardiologist. Arrhythmias are diseases of the heart diagnosed and assessed in a consultation of Cardiology – Arrhythmology and Pacing . Schedule your appointments on MY LUZ app or MY LUZ web version .
