Hospital da Luz Arrábida supported the 8 th edition of Porto International Hip Meeting, which took place between May 31 and June 1, at the congress centre of Sheraton Hotel. The event was organised by Cruz de Melo and Fernando Leal , from the Porto Hip Unit - Hospital da Luz Arrábida, and included also Paulo Rego and Filipe Oliveira , orthopaedists from the Hospital da Luz network, as members of the scientific commission and the organizing commission. The meeting counted with 374 participants from 17 countries , numbers that reflect clearly the rising interest and scientific quality of the event which takes place every two years. Hip pathology and the latest therapies were in focus , including a discussion of clinical cases. The meeting included, in the two previous days, training courses on corpses, which took place in the Anatomy and Experimental Surgery Centre (CACE) of Fernando Pessoa University. “The two courses targeted two areas that fill most of our daily activity, in terms of hip surgery. In the first day, direct anterior total hip prostheses were approached – minimally invasive and allowing a faster recovery, being the technique of choice of our team for a few years now – and cases of arthroscopy were reviewed. The second day was dedicated to hip preservation surgery in young patients with pathologies that cause pain”, explains Fernando Leal. “ The Porto Hip Meeting is a natural consequence of our work ”, highlights on the other hand Cruz de Melo. “We intend to provide the best and most modern care, which presupposes an extra concern regarding training. In that sense, we organize regular courses, visit and receive surgeons from other countries, and culminating all this, we hold every two years the Porto Hip Meeting, that has been growing and is increasingly more important at national level ”, he adds. “ We are living times of great change and such events are very significant , for they allow us to evaluate what we are doing and launch insights into the future, not only for us doctors, but also for health managers and funders”, concludes José Manuel Teixeira , the director of Orthopaedics at Hospital da Luz Arrábida.
