Hospital da Luz will continue to be the official medical service provider to Sport Lisboa e Benfica, until 2023 . The protocol renewing this partnership established in 2014, was signed today by Isabel Vaz, Luz Saúde CEO, and Domingos Soares, SL Benfica CEO, in a ceremony held in the main auditorium of Hospital da Luz Lisboa. As partner, Hospital da Luz ensures clinical assistance to 6,000 athletes of the club – namely, from the professional and non-professional football teams (male and female) and from the modalities of handball, volleyball, basketball, futsal, roller hockey, rugby (male and female), athletics, judo, canoeing, gymnastics, swimming, triathlon, boxing, Benfica Olympic project and billiard. Since this partnership was started, Hospital da Luz Lisboa is the hospital where the athletes’ medical check-ups are done, namely in the beginning of the sporting season, medical tests to new hires, as well as all type of complementary diagnostic exams and treatments, specialty consultations, surgical interventions, clinical analyses and, in the present context, Covid-19 tests (when requested). In the ceremony, Isabel Vaz declared : “The partnership with SL Benfica is, for us, a motive of great pride , for the performance of clinical and administrative teams. They carry out an extraordinary work with athletes, its success relying on the organization of the medical and administrative departments of both SL Benfica and Hospital da Luz.” “This is a very important partnership , for its scale and for allowing our professionals to expand their experience and deepen their knowledge in the clinical follow-up of top-level athletes.” “ Up to the end of 2019 , we carried out about 30 thousand imaging and cardiology exams and clinical analyses, 5,500 specialty consultations and nearly 600 surgeries.” “The whole activity always happens within a relationship of information and knowledge sharing with the medical department of SL Benfica.” Domingos Soares de Oliveira highlighted: “This renewal represents the reinforcement of a partnership between two entities that share the values of excellence and innovation . The over six thousand athletes of Sport Lisboa e Benfica will continue to benefit from a high-quality medical follow-up.” “This relationship, now coming to a decade long , stresses the solidity we look for in our commitments and reflects the confidence of our partners in the present and future of SL Benfica.” “Lastly, this relationship offers the over 200 thousand members of our club preferential conditions in selected services in hospitals and clinics of Hospital da Luz network.” Expansion and investment in Sports Medicine The recent expansion of Hospital da Luz Lisboa facilities – doubling its capacity (now 400 beds), being equipped with the most recent technology of diagnosis and treatment , and having expanded its surgical capacity – allowed the creation of a new Sports Medicine Centre , an area of strong investment. This new centre has all the conditions in human resources, equipment and technology to evaluate, follow-up and treat in a multidisciplinary manner all kind of athletes, from amateur to professionals, with a full and comprehensive response both at technical and clinical level.
