Vision “is probably the most important of senses, the one we lack the most and value the most”, states Guilherme Castela, the coordinator of Hospital da Luz Coimbra Ophthalmology service, where a dedicated and multidisciplinary team is ready to respond globally to the needs of patients, from screening to surgery and rehabilitation. “The team has been reinforced as needed and right now we are able to cover all areas of ophthalmology”, explains the physician, who is specialized in the areas of oculoplastic surgery and paediatric ophthalmology, in a reportage recently published by Diário de Coimbra. “We refer patients among the team, we do not work individually”, adds Guilherme Castela, stressing equally the response capacity in urgent situations. The main diseases affecting the population – namely glaucoma, low vision, diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment –, as well as the importance of regular screening from an early age, are other topics approached in the story.
