February is the month of the World Cancer Day and Hospital da Luz Lisboa joins, once again, the global movement marking the date, by organizing a session dedicated to oncologic patients and their families, next February 16. Promoted by the team of the Oncology Centre of this hospital, the initiative will be free of charges, but all those interests are required to register previously. The first part of the session will be dedicated to social support to oncologic disease and the rights of patients and will have as players Petra João (social worker), Tamara Milagre (Associação Evita) and Fátima Antunes (Associação Amigas do Peito). Since nutrition is one of the aspects raising more questions in this disease, it will be followed by a show cooking of recipes using oral nutritional supplements and healthy gastronomic experiences, by nutritionists Margarida Foute and Cristina Gonçalves. There will also be a discussion on the complementary therapy for oncologic patients, in particular the benefits of acupuncture . And because laughing is essential, the session will end with a surprise prepared by Operação Nariz Vermelho . Cancer is nowadays a common disease in the general population and it is estimated that, in the West, one in three individuals will suffer from cancer throughout life. According to the latest data released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, of the World Health Organization (WHO), Portugal registered over 69 thousand new cases of cancer in 2022, when the number of deaths by cancer reached nearly 34 thousand. To sensitize the population and mobilize it in the fight against cancer is the goal of the World Cancer Day , celebrated every year by the initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), which aggregates over a thousand associations and entities from all over the world that work in this area. For the triennium 2022-2024, the motto “For Fairer Care” was created, to mobilize efforts and potentiate action. We all have a role to play in this fight, across all sectors. And patients, in particular, need our best support. Date and time: 16 February 2024, from 1:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Place: Hospital da Luz Lisboa (auditorium) Registration (mandatory)
