Keratoconus is a disease of the eyes, which translates into a progressive deformation of the cornea, in which it becomes progressively thinner and deformed – it takes on the shape of a cone – which leads to decreased vision. It is a bilateral disease, that is, it affects both eyes, the first symptoms and the most frequent are seeing objects near or far in a distorted way, having double vision using only one eye, feeling greater sensitivity to light, and having eye irritation. Although rare before adolescence, in children or adolescents who already wear glasses, its development can manifest itself as a rapid increase in myopia or astigmatism, which often cannot be completely corrected with glasses. Once the diagnosis is made and depending on the degree of development of the disease, there are different forms of treatment. The ophthalmology team at Hospital da Luz Setúbal currently has all the conditions to treat patients with keratoconus, including performing surgical procedures when this is a therapeutic indication. The surgical treatment of keratoconus involves different procedures and may even involve corneal transplantation. At Hospital da Luz Setúbal, patients find in the ophthalmology service a team prepared to respond to all their needs, with the objective always being to stabilize the progression of the disease and improve the vision of the patient with keratoconus.
