The Portuguese Society of Andrology, Sexual Medicine and Reproduction (SPA) published, last June 19, a paper with the new recommendations for the diagnosis of infection by human papillomavirus (HPV).The document has as co-authors physicians from different units of Hospital da Luz network (HL) and Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA), namely, Bruno Graça (Urology, HL Lisboa, HL Oeiras and HBA), Vasco Serrão (Dermatology, HL Lisboa), José Reis (Gynaecology-Obstetrics, HL Lisboa, Torres de Lisboa and HBA), Sofia Pinheiro Lopes (Urology, HBA), Nuno Tomada and Pedro Vendeira (both from HL Arrábida). In the article, published in the International Journal of Andrology, a review is done of the clinical recommendations for the diagnosis of infection by HPV in man, woman, in the couple and in the immunocompromised host, as well as an updating of the anatomopathological concepts. Infection by HPV: Is quite frequent, and it is estimated that 50% of individuals sexually active are infected at least once in a lifetime. Has an essentially clinical diagnosis, with a thorough exam of the whole genital area. Can have benign manifestations (condyloma acuminate or genital warts), premalignant or malignant manifestations (intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive neoplasia). Bruno Graça, who is also a member of SPA governing bodies since 2010, stresses that this document constitutes the first of a series of Four Consensus on HPV (diagnostic, treatment, follow-up and prevention), which was discussed publicly in the last two years, culminating in the elaboration of these practical guidelines for the different specialists that approach this infection. “Consensus on HPV in men by the Portuguese Society of Andrology, Sexual Medicine and Reproduction: diagnosis”
