The International Clinical Trials Day , celebrated on May 20, has a special meaning in this year of 2021: it was thanks to the efforts of researchers and clinical trials developed in institutions from different countries, that were created the COVID-19 vaccines that are saving millions of lives and giving us all hope. But there are many other projects contributing daily for progress in Medicine – and some of them are developed in collaboration with Luz Saúde group professionals. The celebration of this International Clinical Trials Day is therefore, also an opportunity for us to thank all the professionals that contribute to advancement in Science. In Luz Saúde group, Hospital da Luz Learning Health is the one promoting and supporting the clinical trials carried out in different hospital units. With its Research Centre, Hospital da Luz Learning Health coordinates teams of professionals connected with clinical research, which, since 2009, have already participated in about 165 clinical trials, involving 500 patients. Patients that were, thus, able to benefit from potentially innovating therapeutics in our hospitals. Moreover, a clinical trial was recently published sponsored by Hospital da Luz Lisboa, which was a first in Portugal involving a private hospital. This trial, published on April 27 in Nature’s Scientific Reports, was led by Natália Marto and developed a new tool, that will be useful in precision medicine, since it allows to study individual variability in the response to drugs.
