In Portugal, the number of diabetes cases has doubled these last 20 years and the disease is estimated to affect over a million people. It causes complications in different organs of the body, which can reduce the quality and the number of years of life. It is, for instance, the main cause of blindness, renal failure and non-traumatic amputation. In western countries, it has as main origin the sedentary lifestyle of the population, the lack of physical exercise and an excessively caloric diet. Diagnosing diabetes in time is fundamental.
