The correct use of antibiotics is presently a major challenge in health and, contrary to what most believe, this is a responsibility of all and not only of the doctors that prescribe them. On November 18, the European Antibiotic Awareness Day, a team of health professionals from Hospital da Luz Setúbal will hold an awareness session on the correct use of antibiotics, destined to the general population. Are you aware that antibiotics: are drugs that treat infections caused by bacteria? have no effect on infections caused by viruses, such as colds or flu? are also not adequate to treat fever or muscle pain, headache, or a sore throat (and in that case, antipyretics should be used, namely paracetamol, acetylsalicylic acid, or ibuprofen, among others)? before being discovered, over 70 years ago, thousand of people died in result of bacterial infections, such as pneumonia or post-surgical infection. However, it turns out that there is an increasing number of bacteria becoming resistant – which is a threat to public health. In fact, without effective antibiotics we will not be able to ensure adequate healthcare. To help tackle this problem, there are a few important rules that everyone of us should follow – which will be the topic of this session organized by Hospital da Luz Setúbal. Register and participate in the initiative! Date and time: 18 November 2024, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Place: Hospital da Luz Setúbal Auditorium Registration (mandatory): until 15 November, by email marketing.setubal@hospitaldaluz.pt
