The Centre of Ophthalmology of Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim, coordinated by Manuel Domingues , is already performing ophthalmologic surgeries with the new cutting-edge equipment Lasik Excimer, for the correction of myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia problems. The acquisition of this equipment occurs in the context of a strong bet by this hospital in technology and innovation. Laser surgery is a technique used for the correction of refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism) , through the application of precise laser beams on the cornea (the translucent and most superficial layer of the eye), thus enabling a clearer vision. Laser correction is considered safe up to a limit of eight dioptres. Ophthalmologic surgery with the Lasik Excimer: Is a fast, safe and efficient procedure; Is done under topic (drops) local anaesthesia, and patients feel no pain during the intervention; On average, takes 5-10 minutes / eye; Does not require hospitalization and patients are released from hospital, one hour after the intervention; Causes no postoperative pain. Previously to the surgical procedure, a Pentacam exam is done, where a 3D model of the eyes is created, in order to check the security and understand the shape of the cornea. The time of recovery after surgery with Lasik can vary between 24 hours to a few weeks, but in most cases it is possible to resume work the day after the surgery. What are the criteria for Lasik use? Be 18 or older; Stabilization of the refraction over a year, at least; Absence of ocular pathology contraindicating the surgery; Absence of pregnancy or breastfeeding; Absence of systemic disease contraindicating the surgery.
