Hospital da Luz Arrábida has now available a Gastroenterology – Hepatology consultation, dedicated to the assessment of liver health parameters and to the diagnosis and monitoring of liver disease. In this consultation, the gastroenterologist carries on a systematic evaluation of all clinical data and complementary diagnostic exams, namely blood testing and specific imaging exams. The liver is part of the digestive system and its function is to regulate the metabolism, and filter out and eliminate toxins, thus detoxing the body. Liver diseases are frequent, sometimes deriving from our habits and life styles. The most common diseases are: Fatty liver (liver disease associated with steatosis); Liver disease associated with alcohol; Liver disease associated with medication; Hepatic nodules; Hepatitis and autoimmune cholangitis; Hepatitis associated with viruses; Genetic and family diseases; Hepatic cirrhosis. Liver diseases are often “silent”, causing symptoms only in the most advanced stages (such as fatigue, yellowish skin and eyes, fluid accumulation in the abdomen and lower limbs, propensity to bruises and haemorrhages, among other). The gastroenterology in the Hepatology consultation evaluates all data of the patient’s clinical, personal and family history, and may afterwards prescribe complementary diagnostic exams, such as: Blood analyses; Echography (of the liver and biliary tract); Study of the hepatic nodules (via imaging exams with contrast); Elastography; Hepatic biopsy (in rare cases). Appointments for the Gastroenterology – Hepatology Consultation, in person or via video consultation, may be scheduled on MY LUZ or at hospitaldaluz.pt/arrabida/en
