Bruno Campos, associate director of Luz Saúde Direction of Information Systems and Technologies, and João Pedro Colaço, Hospital da Luz Lisboa intensivist, were guest speakers in the Intelligent Health UK 2022, a forum of world discussion on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Health, which took place in London, on the 6th and 7th April. In their interventions, they presented the Luz Saúde experience in the development and integration, in the clinical information systems, of an AI sepsis predictive model. In their intervention – titled “Using structured data and unstructured clinical notes for the early prediction and diagnosis of sepsis and the critical success factors for clinical adoption” –, the Luz Saúde representatives described the steps along the process of formulation of the problem, exploration and engineering of data, development of the machine learning model, integration in clinical practice and interface with the user, and the results obtained. The early identification of sepsis in patients is decisive for the reduction of mortality, since it allows to apply medication earlier and adequate interventions to control it. The predictive model developed at Luz Saúde counted not only with the clinical data typically available at patient’s bedside, but also with the continuous integration of information registered in the electronic clinical process. Among the critical factors of success in the implementation of AI models in the area of health, the following can be highlighted: The correct formulation of a real problem likely to be solved or mitigated, supported by quality clinical data; The necessary amount of data to train and test the predictive model; The definition of a strategy of integration in clinical practice, in collaboration with end users, guaranteeing the explainability of the result obtained by the model. “The application of AI in health does not have for purpose to replace human intelligence, but rather to enhance its capacity and cognitive magnitude, leveraged by considerable amounts of clinical data and intelligent algorithms supporting the decision”, highlighted Bruno Campos. Intelligent Health UK 2022 was organized by Inspired Minds, a global group of technological and scientific strategy focusing on the application of AI in the different sectors of society, with the participation of over 200 thousand people from about 160 countries.
