A group of surgeons from different hospital institutions in the country created the Portuguese Society of Endocrine Surgery (SPCENDO). Miguel Allen and Henrique Candeias , general surgeons at Hospital da Luz, are two of the founders and a members of the governing bodies of this newly created organization, that was presented to the scientific community on November 10. SPCENDO has for mission “the specific and accredited training, as well as the teaching, development and dissemination in the context of endocrine surgery”. Among the announced goals are, for instance, to promote of quality in treatments and in the specific training of professionals in the area of endocrine diseases, to foster the development of accredited endocrine surgery units in Portugal, as well as to support projects of scientific research and develop multidisciplinary forums for the clinical discussion in this field. Besides these activities, the new scientific society invests on the dissemination of information on endocrine diseases among the general population and patients in particular , which can be found in a dedicated area on its website, containing relevant data from the several surgical fields. “Endocrine surgery is the area of general surgery dedicated to the surgical treatment of endocrine glands pathology: thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine cells”, as it was explained by João Capela da Costa, the president of SPCENDO, speaking to “Just News”.
