Hospital da Misericórdia de Évora opens its doors, next March 4, to all those who wish to take an obesity free medical assessment , a disorder increasingly affecting the population. The initiative, taking place on World Obesity Day, will be free of charge, all those interested will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. More than half of the Portuguese population is in pre-obesity situation or already obese, according to the latest studies conducted by the General Directorate of Health. And according to the World Obesity Federation, by 2035 about 39% of Portuguese adults will be obese. On this Open Day, a team of professionals from this hospital will provide medical consultations of obesity, with complementary assessment of nutrition, nursing, and medical parameters measurement. Obesity: Is a complex chronic disease and one major cause of other diseases, namely diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. The latest health studies indicate that half the Portuguese population is overweight. The World Obesity Day has for goal to alert and raise awareness about this disease, which was recognized as such by the World Health Organization (WHO) for about 20 years ago.
