The most recent topics in the practice of obstetrics and a simulation course on postpartum haemorrhage were the highlights of the Obstetrics Symposium , that took place on October 25 and 26, promoted by Hospital da Luz Learning Health . The event registered a high level of participation and “the balance was quite positive”, stresses Paula Arteaga, the coordinator of the Delivery and Obstetrics Service from Hospital da Luz Lisboa and director of the symposium. This training event in the area of Maternal-Fetal Medicine approached some of the most relevant topics in clinical practice , namely innovations and scientific advances in fields such as: prenatal diagnosis; immunology in pregnancy; and medically assisted procreation. The thromboembolic disease and endocrine diseases, for being frequent themes in daily life with significant impact in terms of morbidity and mortality, were also selected as areas of interest for discussion. The symposium was concluded with a theme always controversial: the different perspectives, in a public and in a private hospital, with regard to birth routes. The symposium included a Simulation Course on Postpartum Haemorrhage , of eminently practical nature, where the participants were invited to solve clinical cases resorting to a simulator. The objective was the specific training of competences in the prompt and efficient response to one of the most serious obstetric emergences and even one of the main causes of maternal morbidity and mortality, all over the world. This course, that registered the participation of 45 trainees, is scientifically recognized by the college of specialty of the Portuguese Medical Association. In the photo above, the team of trainers.
