Hospital da Luz Coimbra was the stage of the first edition of the Ophthalmic Perioperative Nursing Journeys, held on April 5. About a hundred and fifty professionals, specialists in perioperative nursing and ophthalmology / ophthalmic surgery, had the opportunity to discuss here the latest topics in their area, namely the impact of modern technologies, advanced techniques in ophthalmology, and specific care in ophthalmic surgery. “The organization of these scientific journeys concerning nursing in ophthalmic surgery represented a valuable opportunity to update knowledge and practices in this speciality. Such events are a space for sharing experiences, discussing clinical cases, and presenting new studies, thus keeping nurses abreast of the latest innovations and techniques”, explains Tiago Moreira, nurse responsible for the Operating Theatre of Hospital da Luz Coimbra and member of these journeys organizing committee. The journeys were organized by Hospital da Luz Coimbra and Hospital da Luz Learning Health, counting with the support of companies in the sector. The safety of the individual in perioperative situation, nursing intervention in anterior segment surgery, importance of the perioperative consultation for surgical success, and return to home of the patient submitted to cataract surgery were a few of the topics approached. Throughout the day, there was also space for three workshops conducted by Hospital da Luz ophthalmologists: Instrumentation in cataract surgery, Biometry / Alignment, and Premium lenses . “Nursing plays a crucial role in the surgical environment in ophthalmology, contributing not only for the technical success of interventions, but also for the comfort and safety of our patients”, pointed out apropos Guilherme Castela , the ophthalmology coordinator of Hospital da Luz Coimbra. “Collaboration between physicians and nurses not only improves clinical results, as also promotes a more positive experience for the patient”, he added. Summarizing, Tiago Moreira stresses: “These journeys reinforce team spirit and promote the establishment of professional networks that are fundamental for the development of nursing in ophthalmology and for the improvement of care quality. Through continuous training, health professionals can improve their competences, contributing actively to a safer and more efficient surgical environment”.
