Nuno Tomada Marques , Hospital da Luz urologist, was the guest speaker in the international masterclass organized by the Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery Section of the European Association of Urology, on “Erectile restoration and Peyronie’s disease” , which took place online on the 6 th and 7 th October. The masterclass counted with the participation of specialists from all over the world and had for purpose to disseminate the most recent techniques and knowledge in the area. In his intervention, Nuno Tomada presented a few clinical cases and explained the surgical techniques applied. Peyronie’s disease: Is characterized by the presence of fibrosis in any area of the penis , in the form of nodule or plaque, that may be accompanied by pain, penile curvature in erection, erectile dysfunction and penile shortening, with a strong emotional and psychological impact. It may arise at any age, although being more frequent after 40-60 years old, where the disease can affect 1 in every 30 men (>3%). Its origin is still not totally understood, but it is thought to be associated with a microtrauma of the penis in erection in individuals genetically susceptible. It is also associated with diabetes and testosterone reduction. It has an initial acute stage, where pain and curvature in erection are the more relevant complaints, followed by a chronic stage, where pain generally goes away and the penile deformity becomes more evident. When the disease is stabilized, only surgical intervention can solve the problem of the difficulty in intercourse. The surgeries presented by Nuno Tomada in this masterclass are known as plications and are indicated to restore penile functionality , with a minimum risk of complications, such as, for instance, the resurgence of erectile dysfunction or lower sensitivity of the glans. The advances in this technique that the urologist uses at Hospital da Luz, and that he has been implementing over the past few years, allow an optimization of results with a lower occurrence of penile curvature, and were also presented in this masterclass.
