Back pain, low back pain and cervical pain “are the main complaints in orthopaedics consultations” and the major problem is that people in general “disregard prevention and only start taking care of themselves when they feel the pain”, pointed out Ricardo Frada in the TV show “Consultório”, broadcasted on January 7 in Porto Canal. The Hospital da Luz orthopaedist explained in that interview the main causes of back pain, the available treatments for specific relatively serious clinical situations, and identified “the best medicine” for spinal health: physical exercise . Sedentarism, excess weight, a stressful lifestyle with high levels of anxiety are the main causes of back pain, usually by myofascial imbalance triggering pain. Now, the pain provokes functional restrictions, and the greater the restriction, the lesser the movement, which triggers even more pain. “We must bear in mind that the spine grows older throughout life. If we do not take small measures to control these alterations inherent to ageing, we will suffer the consequences”, explained Ricardo Frada. These are a few advice to prevent back pain and take care of spinal health: “It is more than proven that exercise is the main modifiable factor that leads to higher longevity, and longevity with quality of life. Having an active life early on and consistently brings tonicity of the spine stabilizing muscles.” “Avoid remaining seated for four or five consecutive hours. When seated, maintain a correct posture.” “A daily walk is good, but insufficient to work regularly and strengthen the abdominal and lumbar muscles that sustain the spine. For that it is necessary a program of exercises, which are not too complex and can even be done at home (there are many apps and videos online, for instance). The excuse ‘I have no time for it; I cannot do it’ justifies less and less the lack of exercise.” “Exercise must be customized. Pilates and water aerobics are good alternatives, as is gym workout, but must be monitored by professionals.” Note also that intense pain radiating to a limb (upper or lower), associated with numbness, tingling or strength loss are warning signs, indicating clinical situations that require specific medical treatment (namely herniated discs).
