Hospital da Luz Guimarães joins the Pink October initiative – the month dedicated to the fight against breast cancer – and will offer free screenings with mammography all month long. These screenings are exclusively destined for women from 45 to 74 not having taken a mammography in the last two months. All those interested are required to previously schedule an appointment via MY LUZ. The results of the screenings will be analysed by Cátia Ribeiro , general surgeon of Hospital da Luz Guimarães and specialist in breast diseases. Breast cancer is the most frequent oncologic disease and the first cause of death by cancer in women, in Portugal, around 9 thousand new cases being detected every year. With an early diagnosis and adequate treatment, breast cancer is curable in the majority of patients, being fundamental to raise awareness to the importance of prevention and to divulge information on support to patients and families. October is the month where institutions all over the world working in the area develop campaigns to alert the population to the importance of prevention and early diagnosis in the fight against breast cancer, pink being adopted as the distinctive colour. The Pink October movement originated in the United States, in the 90s, and since then pink is used globally in such initiatives and also to pay tribute to the women suffering or having suffered from breast cancer. If you are between 45 and 74 and have not taken a mammography in the last two years, take this opportunity.
