The scientific publication “Journal of Electrocardiology” published an article resulting from a research work being developed at Hospital da Luz Lisboa and Hospital da Luz Learning Health, on the origins of ventricular extrasystoles. The research is being conducted on the initiative of Ana Leonor Costa Parreira , cardiologist specialized in Cardiac Electrophysiology. Ventricular extrasystoles: Are supplementary anomalous heartbeats originated in the ventricles, instead of the normal ones that are sinus-originated. It’s quite common to detect them in a 24-hour Holter monitoring (a cardiac exam where heartbeats are recorded along 24 hours); Are generally considered benign, but highly symptomatic for patients; May result in cardiac dilation when very frequent, or give origin to more serious arrhythmias. Have indication for ablation (definitive treatment, resorting to radiofrequency and applied through catheter), differentiated depending on its origin in the right or left ventricle, considering the complications inherent to the point of origin (class I, with origin in the right ventricle, or class II, with origin in the left ventricle). “With the non-invasive mapping methodology being developed at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, supported by a Luz Saúde research grant, we have shown that it is possible to identify previously to the ablation, the location of the extrasystoles in the right or left ventricle ”, explains Ana Leonor Costa Parreira. Hospital da Luz Learning Health is a Luz Saúde company dedicated to professional training, research and innovation in the area of health, one of the strategic bets of the Group and its Hospital da Luz network units.
