Rita Gama , the coordinator of the Hospital da Luz Lisboa paediatric ophthalmology team , was distinguished with the Best Free Paper Award in the congress of the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS), that took place last 25 and 26 September, in virtual mode. The award was bestowed to the free communication presented by her to the participants in the congress and was based on a study conducted in this hospital , concerning “The influence of age and disc size in optic disc parameters measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT)”. The OCT is a common exam in the clinical practice of ophthalmology: using a non-invasive technology, it allows to study the multiple structures of the eye, based on their capacity to reflect light. When analysing the optic disc, the OCT enables to diagnose diseases such as glaucoma. This study – conducted by Hospital da Luz physicians and orthoptists, involving 250 consultation patients who volunteered to participate – came to add that, in the diagnosis of glaucoma, the age of the patient and the size of the optic disc should be considered. The WSPOS was founded in 2008 and has for goal to promote research and knowledge sharing between specialists in the area of paediatric ophthalmology.
