A group of 15 health professionals had the opportunity to train , last June 18, clinical cases of medical emergency in children , resorting to the most advanced paediatric simulators, that are available in the Training, Research and Innovation Centre of Hospital da Luz Learning Health. The PedSimlab - Simulation Course on Paediatric Emergency was organized by Hospital da Luz Lisboa Paediatrics Department and received very positive critiques from the participants, that did not hide their enthusiasm for having had the opportunity to deal with rare and complex cases in hospital activity, in an extremely realistic simulation environment, allowing them to be better prepared to face them in their clinical practice. “The stabilization of a seriously ill child requires knowledge and training in algorithms, competencies, quick and confident decision-making, besides teamwork, efficient communication and clinical experience”, highlights Filipa Marques , paediatrician and organizer of the course. “Paediatric urgency and emergency based on real clinical cases were developed in paediatric simulators and the participants had to provide care to ‘patients’ in real time”, she adds. The PedSimlab course: Is destined to internists and specialists in Anaesthesiology, Paediatric Cardiology, Paediatric Surgery, General and Family Medicine, and nurses dedicated to Paediatrics. Uses the simulators Simbaby and Paediatric HAL ® , the most advanced paediatric patient in the world, with unique features such as the ability to direct the gaze and to show realistic emotions through facial expression, movement and speech. This simulator is installed in the Training, Research and Innovation Centre of Hospital da Luz Learning Health, since the end of 2018, being the first simulator of the kind in a hospital in Europe and the second in the world. The use of simulation as learning tool enables to train clinical situations in a controlled and safe environment. The cases are video recorded for subsequent viewing by trainees and discussion oriented by trainers. At the end of a very full day, the 15 participants in PedSimlab spared no praise: “I really enjoyed it, it was very useful and I believe it will improve my clinical practice”; “An extremely didactic course, with manikins that reproduce what happens in everyday life. We have learned a lot and it will be very useful”; “I really appreciated the course! It was quite useful, for we had the opportunity to watch and ‘intervene’ in many scenarios, that we rarely encounter in our clinical practice. It is always important to be prepared to respond to such scenarios”; “It is a very well structured and organized course, extremely dynamic, with well-conceived scenarios. It will certainly have an impact on my professional activity, for it involved extreme clinical cases, situations that we rarely encounter. It served to mobilize and consolidate knowledge.” Hospital da Luz Learning Health and the Paediatrics Department of Hospital da Luz Lisboa thank all those that made this course possible. Stay tuned for the next edition!
