The Oporto Book Fair, which took place between August 23 and September 8, was stage of an intense agenda of cultural events and discussion sessions, the so-called “Conversas entre livros” (Talks in-between books). In the afternoon of the last day, RTP journalist Carlos Daniel moderated a panel of specialists debating the importance of “Sports Medicine in high-level sports” , involving professionals of Hospital da Luz Arrábida Sports Medicine Centre. The space reserved for this session was packed with visitors, who followed with interest the views of Paulo Colaço, professor in the Sports Faculty of Oporto University, and the first-hand account by Miguel Queirós, athlete of FC Porto and of the National Basketball Team. It was up to Diogo Dias and Marco Oliveira , physicians specialized in Sports Medicine and Cardiology respectively, and Joana Cerqueira , sports coach, all from Hospital da Luz Arrábida, to explain the importance of their areas for the health, efficiency and high performance of athletes. This was also an opportunity to remind that all practitioners of sports, professional or leisure athletes, should be regularly evaluated by a sports medicine specialist and take the recommended exams. Having all athletes in mind – adults and children, healthy people and people with disease, leisure and professional practitioners –, Hospital da Luz Arrábida created, two years ago, its Sports Medicine Centre , with a team of specialists in different areas. Previous medical evaluation is indicated for all those who intend to initiate or continue any sports activity: the sports medicine physician assesses the overall health condition, the history of diseases and / or injuries, and considers the type of physical activity to perform. On the other hand, sports coaching is a tool of human development intended to teach every individual how to reach his full potential, learn more about and challenge himself, and how to improve his performance.
