Thyroid diseases have multiple symptoms, we generally tend to underestimate and that are common to other clinical conditions. But about a million Portuguese are estimated to suffer from thyroid disorders, half of the cases undiagnosed. Thyroid cancer is a malignant tumor of the thyroid gland, usually manifested as a nodule in the neck, most of the time with no pain. “Often, the nodules are not perceptible or grow inward (non-palpable). And sometimes they are visible, but unnoticed” , explained the doctor. “A minority of thyroid carcinomas are extremely aggressive. Therefore, diagnosis is the disease key factor” and “information, referral and counselling are essential”, he added. Member of the Scientific Counselling Board of the Thyroid Diseases Association (ADTI), Francisco Sobral Rosário practices endocrinology in Hospital da Luz units of Lisbon and Oeiras.
