The Intensive / Intermediate Care Unit of Hospital da Luz Coimbra , coordinated by Jorge Pimentel , was the first of the kind in a private hospital in the Centre region and, since 2018, it has already treated almost 2,000 patients. Comprising a permanent specialized medical staff and nursing team, to deal with any eventual internal emergency, the activity of the IICU is in highlight on a reportage in “Diário de Coimbra”. The IICU allowed to performed in all safety the most complex surgical interventions and /or to provide care to critical patients, requiring intermediate or intensive care in the post-operative stage. It is worth noting that this unit serves all the Hospital da Luz network in the Centre region , with patients from Hospital da Luz Aveiro and Hospital da Luz Oiã sent to the Coimbra unit, for clinical safety reasons. Several areas benefit from the IICU, but mostly Orthopaedics, Cardiology and General Surgery, as emphasised on the reportage by surgeons Armando Pires (Orthopaedics), Emanuel Furtado (General Surgery), Gonçalo Coutinho (Cardiac Curgery), Júlio Leite (General Surgery) and Marco Costa (Interventional Cardiology). In fact, surgical pathologies represent about 90% of the cases of patients assisted in the IICU of Hospital da Luz Coimbra.
