Hospital da Luz Setúbal will organize, on February 4, the World Cancer Day, a special session destined to patients and families and anyone with interest in the topic. The initiative – with free access, but mandatory pre-registration by e-mail marketing.setubal@hospitaldaluz.pt – will be organized by physicians and nurses of the Medical Oncology team, with the participation of other specialists in this hospital. The program includes two parts: In the first part, specialists of General and Family Medicine will explain the increasing importance of prevention and cancer diagnosis at an early stage, oncologist João Rato will approach the “weapons” of Medicine to fight the disease, and nurses Ana Ortiz and Mafalda Meneses will explain the care to have after treatments. In the second part, there will be a mindfulness session hold by nurse Beatriz Ascensão, the workshop “Take care of myself: quality of life for the oncologic patient” oriented by psychologist Cláudia Martins , and also a question-and-answer period on the topic “Living with cancer” , offered by the Oncology team. Across the globe, 9.6 million people die every year with cancer, when many of these deaths could be prevented with more programs of early detection, prevention, and treatment. In Portugal, the latest figures reported by the National Oncologic Report indicate a 5% increase of new cases (between 2019 and 2021), the most frequent cancers being breast, colorectal, prostate and lung. The World Cancer Day celebrates 25 years in 2025: Its goal is raising the awareness of global population and engaging everyone in the fight against cancer; Is celebrated on the initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), which aggregates over a thousand associations and entities from all over the world working in this area; Has for motto this year “United by Unique” , a way of highlighting the importance of personalized patient-centred care, englobing individual differences and ensuring access to proper care.
