Several units within Hospital da Luz network will mark the World Diabetes Day, November 14, with free screenings. See below the list of units and scheduling with all the necessary information. Screenings do not require previous registration. They will be provided by Hospital da Luz health professionals, who will also be available to give information on diabetes and clear any doubts. Diabetes is a chronic disease and, in most cases, a silent one. About 40% of people with diabetes are not diagnosed. Every adult aged 45 or more should take the diabetes screening, even with no apparent overweight or other risk factors. Screening should always be taken, regardless of age, in the case of people with excess weight and at least one additional risk factor – such as, for instance, physical inactivity, first-degree relatives with diabetes, high blood pressure, and altered cholesterol profile. The early diagnosis of diabetes is fundamental. This disease is in fact the main cause of blindness, renal failure, and non-traumatic amputation. In western countries, it has as primary cause the sedentary lifestyle of the population, lack of physical exercise and an excessively caloric diet.
