Hospital da Misericórdia de Évora (Hospital da Luz Network) will offer on November 14, the World Diabetes Day, free health screenings destined to the general public. The hospital team will be available at the Évora Plaza Shopping Center all day long, divulging information on the disease and carrying out screenings, including glucose measurement and BMI calculation . Simply put, we could say that having diabetes means having too much sugar in the blood (glucose), due to a disturbance in the sugar metabolism. In Portugal, the number of diabetes cases has doubled these last 20 years and the disease is estimated to affect over a million people. It is a chronic disease and in most cases silent. About 40% of people with diabetes ignore that they have the disease. It causes complications in different organs of the body, which can reduce the quality and the number of years of life. It is, for instance, the main cause of blindness, renal failure and non-traumatic amputation. In western countries, it has as main origin the sedentary lifestyle of the population, the lack of physical exercise and an excessively caloric diet. Diagnosing diabetes in time is fundamental. Take the screening! Date: 14 th November 2023, from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Place: Évora Plaza Shopping Center
