Carlos Robalo Cordeiro , pulmonologist at Hospital da Luz Coimbra and director of the Medicine Faculty of Universidade de Coimbra, was elected to direct the European Respiratory Society (ERS). Founded in 1990, this is the major European scientific organization dedicated to respiratory diseases and it is the first time that it will have a Portuguese physician as president. Throughout the four-year mandate, according to the ERS rules, Carlos Robalo Cordeiro will start by assuming the position of vice-president (2020-2021), then president (2022-2023) and finally past-president (2023-2024). “My election is the recognition of the work developed by Portuguese pulmonology. I am extremely grateful, in particular to the Portuguese Society of Pulmonology, for all the support given, namely in this electoral process”, states Carlos Robalo Cordeiro in an interview published on SPP site.
