Surgeons of the Hip Unit from Hospital da Luz Arrábida, in Vila Nova de Gaia, and from Orthopaedic Hospital Sant’Ana, in Parede (Cascais), were the protagonists of a remote training experience, using surgical smart glasses with Rods & Cones technology, from Johnson & Johnson. While one surgeon performed the surgery and explained all the procedures, the other surgeon watched remotely following the images transmitted in streaming by the smart glasses used by the former surgeon. “We made history today, in Portugal. This opens new possibilities in medical training”, highlights Cruz de Melo , Hospital da Luz Arrábida surgeon. “It was as if I was the one performing the operation, apart from the sense of touch. It is very important in terms of training and allows us to be more at ease”, explains Gonçalo Viana, from Hospital de Sant’Ana, physician in training at this hospital. In practice, the smart glasses Rods & Cones allow those who are watching to have the vision of the surgeon , as if they were present. In this training event, two hip surgeries were performed: The first one at Hospital da Luz Arrábida , performed by Cruz de Melo, who explained step by step, in detail, all the surgical stages, as well as the techniques commonly used. At the same time, he answered the questions posed by the surgeon in training, that was at Hospital de Sant’Ana – allowing an interaction similar to an in-person event, with the advantage of being able to observe the different procedures from the standpoint of the surgeon; The second one took place at Hospital de Sant’Ana and had the remote assistance of Cruz de Melo. Through the smart glasses, it was possible for this surgeon to make notes and clear the doubts that were raised by the surgical team at Hospital de Sant’Ana.
