The course Critical Events in the Operating Theatre , that took place on June 5 at the Centre of Training, Research and Innovation of Hospital da Luz Learning Health, was fully booked and received very positive critics from the participants , among internists and specialists in Anaesthesiology, students in the 6 th year of Medicine and nurses. “Enrolment in the course was rapidly sold out, therefore, considering the demand and the very positive impression left on participants, a repetition and follow-up is in prospect aiming to approach other possible clinical events in the operating theatre”, advances Cristina Pestana , the assistant coordinator of Hospital da Luz Lisboa Operating Theatre and Anaesthesiology Department, responsible for the organization of this course. “With around 352 million surgeries performed all over the world, training in the so-called critical events in the operating theatre is highly important”, the specialist adds. Therefore, the participants had the opportunity to approach, in a context of simulation, different types of scenarios the health professionals may face in the operating theatre, namely: Anaphylactic shock; Adverse reactions to local anaesthetics; Intraoperative cardiac arrest; Haemorrhagic shock; Malignant hyperthermia; Approach in difficult airway. In each case, the participants trained specific technical competencies , but also non-technical competencies – such as leadership, communication and team work. All scenarios were followed by a debriefing. Before this full day of training, the participants were subject to pre-testing to assess knowledge (on online format) and took a theoretical e-learning session. At the end of the course, they took a new testing. The Course Critical Events in the Operating Theatre of Hospital da Luz counted with the scientific sponsorship of the National Association of Doctors, the Portuguese Society of Anaesthesiology, the Portuguese Association of Simulation, and the Regional Anaesthesiology Club. It has EACCME ® accreditation (European Accreditation Council for Continuous Medical Education) and provided participants with eight credits. Hospital da Luz Learning Health and the educational group of Hospital da Luz Lisboa Department of Anaesthesiology thank all those that made this training possible. Stay tuned for the next edition!
