11 Specialists with Exclusive Training in Grupo Luz Saúde Units

Five new physicians, having completed specific training at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, received the title of specialists. This is the first time that young doctors became specialists with exclusive training in the health private sector in Portugal. But they are not an exception, in Grupo Luz Saúde.

Six other new doctors also received the title of specialists, after completing their training at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo, in Loures, the public hospital run in public-private partnership by Luz Saúde.

During the month of April, when the final examinations of internists in medical and surgical specialties took place all over the country, the 11 internal physicians with exclusive training at those two units of Grupo Luz Saúde completed their specialization.

They are now specialists recognized by the National Association of Doctors – four in Internal Medicine and one in Nuclear Medicine, at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, and six in Internal Medicine, at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo.

The education of young health professionals in different areas is a major investment of Grupo Luz Saúde, in all of its units.

Presently, at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, there are more 17 interns in training, three of them being expected to complete specialization in the next year.

At Hospital da Luz Arrábida, in Vila Nova de Gaia, there are other three interns in training, and at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo, over 70 interns are taking specialization.

It is worth noting that Hospital da Luz Lisboa has been repeatedly the first choice for internship in Internal Medicine, Pathological Anatomy and Nuclear Medicine. Hospital Beatriz Ângelo was also, repeatedly, the first choice for specialization in Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, Gynaecology-Obstetrics, Oncology, Paediatrics and Internal Medicine, among other specialties – which reflects the dynamic and quality of the educational activity in Grupo Luz Saúde units.

The National Association of Doctors recognized, in 2013, educational competence to Hospital da Luz Lisboa, this being the first private unit in Portugal to receive such recognition, in Neurology for instance. Presently, six services of this hospital have competence to train specialist physicians: Pathological Anatomy, Anaesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, Neurology and Medical Oncology.

At Hospital Beatriz Ângelo, that obtained educational recognition in 2013 by the National Association of Doctors, there are 18 services competent to train specialists: Anaesthesiology, General Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Gynaecology-Obstetrics, Infectology, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Neurology, Neuroradiology, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Pulmonology, Psychiatry, Radiology and Urology.

Finally, Hospital da Luz Arrábida has recognized competence to give specialized training in Internal Medicine, since 2014.

Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA) has, presently, in post-graduated training, about 100 young doctors, among specialty interns and common year interns.

This Grupo Luz Saúde unit has also responsibilities in the education of Medicine students, being in charge of the 6th year of graduation course, of the Medical Sciences Faculty, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and being also in charge of the subject of Surgery in that same year, that counts presently with 248 students (114 receiving training at HBA and 56 at Hospital da Luz Lisboa).

Additionally, HBA receives, throughout the academic year, students of the Faculty of Medicine from Universidade de Lisboa and Universidade do Algarve, and interns from the courses of Nutrition Sciences, Clinical Psychology and Management, besides students from the General Course of Nursing and Mastership and Specialization in Nursing.
