Basic Life Support Course for the General Public
Hospital da Luz Learning Health will organize, on July 4, a basic life support course (BLS), destined to the general public. This course is certified by the Portuguese Council of Resuscitation (CPR) and by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), and validated for five years, allowing the acquisition of BLS competencies to approach an adult victim in cardiorespiratory arrest, including the safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Anyone can learn how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and, thus, learn how to save lives. About 88% of victims of sudden cardiorespiratory arrest suffer the attack at home and at least 8% manage to survive. An efficient cardiopulmonary resuscitation, initiated immediately after the cardiorespiratory arrest, can double or even triple the chances of survival, but only 32% of victims receive support from duly qualified persons.
Through practical demonstration of the application of BLS manoeuvres, in an efficient way and in the correct sequence, the participants in the course will afterwards have competence to:
- Know the procedures and specific techniques of BLS with AED;
- Place the unconscious victim, breathing normally, in lateral recovery position (LRP);
- Clear the airway of the victim;
- Act adequately in case of airway obstruction by a foreign object;
- Know how to proceed in case of cardiorespiratory arrest, until the arrival of a team of advanced life support (ALS).
Trainees are evaluated regarding performance and will be considered apt, when demonstrating to have acquired the knowledge and the necessary competencies to apply BLS manoeuvres of quality and know how to use the automated external defibrillator safely.
Schedule and Location: July 4, Casas da Cidade Lisboa (adjoining building to Hospital da Luz)
